Before the Wyoming Department of Transportation issues your CDL, you must pass a DOT physical — a medical exam performed by a certified examiner that confirms you're fit to operate a commercial vehicle.
The examiner checks your vision, hearing, blood pressure, and general health, then issues a Medical Examiner's Certificate (often called a "DOT medical card"). You file this with the Wyoming Department of Transportation, and it must be renewed periodically to keep your CDL valid.

Do I need Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) in Wyoming?
Yes for first-time Class A or B applicants, Class B to A upgrades, and first-time passenger, school bus, or hazmat endorsements. Military skills-waiver applicants still take knowledge tests; holders of a valid U.S. military license may not need ELDT after passing written tests.
Do I need a DOT medical certificate for a CDL in Wyoming?
Yes if you self-certify as NI or NA. Effective January 1, 2026, medical examiners must submit results electronically through the National Registry — Driver Services no longer accepts paper certificates. Keep medical status current or your CDL can be downgraded. Wyoming Intrastate Waivers (K restriction) are available for certain vision, hearing, diabetes, or limb conditions; Alternative Vision Standard and FMCSA SPE programs may remove interstate restrictions when eligible.
What do I need to bring to apply for a CDL permit in Wyoming?
Appear in person at a driver exam office to be photographed. Bring identity and residency documents from WYDOT's CDL documents list, a valid Wyoming driver license, and confirm your DOT medical certificate is on your record via NRII if required. Do I need a background check for a hazmat endorsement in Wyoming?
Yes. Complete hazmat ELDT theory before the knowledge test, pass the written hazmat exam, and finish a TSA security threat assessment. Hazmat must be retested when you renew or transfer a Wyoming CDL with the H endorsement. Drivers under 21 who hold hazmat receive a K (intrastate only) restriction except under an FMCSR exemption.
How much do Wyoming CDL permits and tests cost?
A commercial learner's permit is $45 ($45 to renew). A new CDL is $55; renewals are $45. Written knowledge tests are free. The skills test is $85 and must be paid when you schedule — no-shows without 24-hour cancel notice and failed tests forfeit the fee.
What is Wyoming's Intrastate Waiver?
Drivers who cannot meet federal physical standards for vision, hearing, diabetes, or limb impairment may seek a Wyoming Intrastate Waiver to operate CMVs only within Wyoming. The National Registry examiner notes an Intrastate/State/Wyoming waiver on the medical certificate; upon approval, WYDOT adds a K restriction. Alternative Vision Standard and FMCSA SPE programs may allow interstate driving when eligible.
Can military members waive the Wyoming CDL skills test?
Possibly. Service members employed within the last 12 months in a military CMV-equivalent role may apply with the Application for Military Skills Test Waiver. Knowledge tests cannot be waived, and School Bus or Passenger endorsements cannot transfer under the waiver.
When must I get my Wyoming CDL after skills testing?
After you pass skills testing, you must pay for and be issued your CDL before your CLP expires. Skills tests can be scheduled before ELDT is finished, but the appointment will be canceled (and a new fee may apply) if ELDT completion cannot be verified beforehand.
